What is blizzard warning?

A blizzard warning is issued by the National Weather Service when blizzard conditions are expected to occur within the next 12 to 36 hours. These conditions include sustained winds or frequent gusts of 35 miles per hour or greater, plus considerable falling or blowing snow reducing visibility to ¼ mile or less, lasting for at least 3 hours.

The impact of a blizzard can be severe, leading to:

  • Dangerous travel conditions: Near-zero visibility can make driving extremely hazardous, leading to accidents and stranding motorists.
  • Power outages: Heavy snow and strong winds can down power lines, resulting in widespread power outages.
  • Risk of hypothermia and frostbite: Prolonged exposure to cold temperatures and wind chill can cause hypothermia and frostbite.
  • Damage to property: Strong winds can damage buildings and other structures.

Before a blizzard, it's important to prepare by:

  • Having a supply kit that includes food, water, medications, a flashlight, and extra batteries.
  • Ensuring you have a way to heat your home in case of a power outage.
  • Making sure your vehicle is winterized and has a full tank of gas.
  • Staying informed about the weather forecast and any warnings or advisories issued by the National Weather Service.

During a blizzard, it's crucial to:

  • Stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.
  • If you must go outside, dress warmly in layers and cover exposed skin.
  • Check on elderly neighbors or those who may need assistance.
  • Be aware of the signs of hypothermia and frostbite.
